No, You're Still Outside

I went to a puppet theater performance of an adaptation of Miyazawa Kenji's Ginga tetsudou no yoru and afterwards found myself explaining it to a group of Japanese people who had no idea what was going on.

This picture makes me sad. It's where I will always be.

The photo is easily recognizable to anyone who has lived in a Japanese house: it's the genkan, namely a small space inside the house below floor level that is technically considered outside. Normally, it's just the place where you take off your shoes, but often people who come to your home (delivery people, door-to-door advertisers, people you invite over) will stay there unless specifically invited inside.

It's my week attempt at punning on the original meaning of gaijin, namely one who is outside the home/family/clan.
